Why choose immersive training?

Are you looking for modern training tools? Want to learn more about immersive training?

Are you looking for modern training tools? Want to learn more about immersive training?

Then our article is for you.

In recent years, technology has been advancing at an ever-faster pace. Today, virtual reality headsets are part of our lives. And if their use can help us to learn more, virtual reality can immerse us even more.

That's what we're going to find out in this article:

  • The goal of immersive training
  • The changes it brings
  • The benefits of using it

Once you've finished, you'll know all the secrets of immersive training.

So let's get started!

What is immersive training?

immersive training

Blending reality and fiction, these new immersive training courses exploit the technology of virtual reality, or augmented reality, to immerse the learner in a specific situation.

This type of training enables total immersion during exercises by projecting an environment or digital virtual elements into the participants' virtual reality headsets.

What uses are immersive training courses?

The aim of immersive training is to make training sessions more productive and educational. Hands-on experience is one of the quickest and easiest ways to assimilate information.

Based on this premise, immersive training centers have gradually sprung up, offering courses where practice can be implemented in augmented reality. In this way, we have seen the emergence of training courses in fire safety, industrial environmental protection, hygiene, etc.

This type of training makes it possible to fictitiously implement a situation that would be difficult, or even dangerous, to carry out in reality. The only limit to immersive training scenarios is imagination.

Immersive training in augmented reality or virtual reality?

The two training courses are virtually identical, both using the projection of an environment to create a situation. The difference lies in the way they are delivered.

VR (virtual reality) offers totally virtual immersion, thanks to the VR headset on your head. Everything you see is fictional and computer-generated. Several people can be immersed in the same environment.

Augmented reality (AR), or mixed reality, is a technology that implants digital objects into the real world via a screen. This technology lets you stay in “our world” and add, via projection on AR glasses, totally virtual elements with which to interact.

What's the difference with conventional training?

immersive virtual reality training

The biggest difference, as we briefly mentioned, is the ability to practice for high-risk situations. Typically, fire hazards are a perfect example.

In conventional training, not every learner has the opportunity to handle a fire extinguisher operationally, let alone to put out a fire. This would be far too costly and dangerous.

Virtual reality creates a virtual fire and immerses the trainee in the situation. For example, the trainee must manipulate the extinguisher, virtually, to extinguish the simulated fire.

What are the advantages of immersive training?

Immersive training therefore offers a number of real advantages for teaching. Find out more about the benefits of immersive learning:

Promotes memorization

As briefly mentioned above, practising significantly increases our chances of retaining information. In fact, according to one study, we retain :

  • 10 % for learning to read
  • 30 % for visual learning
  • 60 % for manual learning

Simply put, the more you perform an action, the easier it is to remember. Immersive training is essentially based on this concept. In immersive training, you take part, and that's how you quickly learn the right gestures and attitudes.

Allows you to put yourself in a situation

Practical situations are part of the training curriculum, but some situations are more complicated to set up. We've already mentioned the case of fires: we can't risk declaring a fire so that each learner can practice the right gesture.

The same applies to dangerous situations in factories, handling chemical products, or emergency accident situations. VR makes it possible to create a virtual environment with which to interact in such situations.

For a training course such as sales or leadership, the computer can generate dozens of virtual people, with very different characters, enabling you to vary the situations and thus enhance your experience.

Cost-effective training

To take the fire example again, imagine having to invest in dozens of fire extinguishers just to get learners to practice. The cost of such training would be astronomical.

Thanks to VR, you can materialize virtual fire extinguishers that can be used at will. Even more interesting is the augmented reality offered by some training centers, which lets you handle a real fire extinguisher, specially modified to interact with the virtual fire.

Total safety

VR is in no way dangerous for the user. Anything that happens in the virtual world has no impact on reality. So you can experience dangerous situations without risking your life.

This unique experience will give you a first-hand view of the potential risks that may arise, so that you can act accordingly in your day-to-day work.
